We walked toward the far end of that popular city, near the Church of St. John at Kaneo, to catch the sunset.
To reach this beautiful spot, we first walked along the stone paths leading from the city of Ohrid up to the Castle and church.
We stopped at a cafe for a quick Americano and cappuccino to take a short break during the walk. Since I didn’t see much filter coffee around here, I mostly drank an Americano.
As we walked along these paths, we saw the homes and gardens of the local people, as well as their plants and flowers.
I say “walking,” but it was often more like a hike.
And while we were busy with that, questions like “Do the people who live here have very strong legs?” or “How do the elderly manage to live here?” kept popping into my mind. It occurred to me that living with this incredible lake view might have its own set of challenges.
As we made our way through the houses and stepped right into the heart of the area, we walked along the seaside on rocky paths, surrounded by pine trees and other varieties of trees.
After walking a little further along the edge of this hill, this beautiful view of the church suddenly comes into view.
We’d like to take a short break here while enjoying the view of the church and look around a bit more.
Here’s a closer look at the church. There is a drinking fountain at the entrance to the church. I saw some people leaving tips there.
As we walk around the church, we are treated to incredible views of the lake and the sunset.
Where the sun sets—that is, the western shore of the lake across from us is Albania.
This church is small, simple, and incredibly beautiful, especially during sunset when the sky and the lake start glowing with soft orange and blue colors. Even if you are not deeply interested in history or religion, the atmosphere here feels special almost immediately here.
To get to the city center from the seaside promenade, we go down the stairs to sea level.
When we walk down the stairs to the water’s edge, this is the view that greets us. Isn’t it a beautiful view?
Isn’t nature truly beautiful as we continue walking along the wooden promenade?
