When we went on a tour of Lake Ohrid, the first stop we made was the Museum of Bones.

Houses at Bay of Bones museum

For a small fee, I entered the museum on this beach. The museum features a reconstruction of life as it was before the Common Era.

Everything in this museum reflects the daily lives of the people who lived during that period. And the houses in this museum are all made of wood and, I think, some kind of earthen materials.

It’s basically a small ancient village built above the water on wooden platforms, surrounded by the incredible blue colors of Lake Ohrid and dramatic mountain views. Walking there feels strangely peaceful, especially when the weather becomes cloudy and the lake turns darker and moodier. The whole place has a quiet cinematic atmosphere, almost like stepping into another century.

Inside of these wooden huts, you can see how these people lived thousands of years ago. There are so simple beds, used handmade tools, clay pots, and fishing equipments.

Nothing really feels overly polished or artificial, because of this the experience more enjoyable here. It feels natural, calm, and authentic.

I felt less like a museum and more like a hidden little world floating on the lake.
